Craig Perks, the former Players champion who now works for Golf Channel tweeted yesterday that with only two sponsors — Jeld-Wen and PWC — and as a result:
TV coverage [on Golf Channel and NBC] will have two 1 minute commercial breaks per hour!!
That breaks the record held by The Masters which, famously, has 56 minutes out of every hour of golf action. They have three sponsors at Augusta.
Should be fun to watch — lots and lots of golf. What a concept.
UPDATE: As noted by reader Jeff, in 2003 The Masters did not air commercials. They did, however, air ads for The First Tee. So The Players is breaking a record held by The Masters for every year except 2003 and 2004.
What I do not know is how much those First Tee ads added up to, but I doubt it broke the record for those two years.
Thanks Jeff for reading and chiming in.
