This week on the PGA Tour it’s the Shell Houston Open, the final tune-up before the first major of the year next week, The Masters. It’s a great field — including Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood — all trying to get their games in tune on a golf course made to play as similar to Augusta as possible.

TV Coverage is Thursday-Friday, Golf Channel, 3-6pm ET, Saturday-Sunday, Golf Channel 1-3pm ET and Saturday-Sunday, NBC, 3-6pm ET.

Another twenty-something winning starts this week’s What It Means:

Martin Laird Wins at Bay Hill: Laird fits the trend: another guy in his 20s from Europe winning on the PGA Tour. And this time he used a nifty European links-style bump and run shot to help put his round back on track. After struggling in the first portion of the round that included a water ball on 11, Laird used the useful shot out of the trees on 15 to get himself into position to make a birdie, followed by another on 16 and a sensational two-putt par to clinch victory on 18. It was Laird’s second PGA Tour victory, the first coming in 2009 in Las Vegas.

Yes, this will probably bring chuckles from many but it’s true. Tiger Woods and GolfZoom have partnered to create “Tiger Woods: My Swing: a mobile app that can take video of your golf swing and get instant analysis from Tiger. You can also view Tiger’s swing and compare certain positions to yours.

Tiger says he uses the technology himself all the time, and that it was only natural to try and get it out to the consumers.

“It’s not an instructional piece,” Woods said during an interview at the Bay Hill Club, where he begins play Thursday in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “I give him the lines and the positions I look for. He or she does not have to use that. It’s merely a guide. I’m just saying, this is what I use, this is why I use this position, for that reason. It is a guide to help you improve your game.”

Proceeds go to the Tiger Woods foundation.

The cost is $9.99 and is currently available for the iPhone and iPod Touch only but Tiger says they are working on versions for the iPad and Android devices.

It’s already in the top 5 in US sports app sales for today, and I have a feeling this is will be a really popular app. I’m anxious to use it myself in the coming days and weeks.

The NFL owners passed a couple new rules today put through by the NFL Competition Committee. First, the new kickoff rule:

NFL kickoffs will take place at the 35-yard line — not the 30 — under a modified proposal passed by team owners Tuesday at the league’s annual meeting.

However, touchbacks will remain at the 20, and teams still will be allowed to use the two-man blocking wedge.

This rule is supposed to help player safety but I’m very against it for obvious reasons. As a Jets fan, this will hurt Brad Smith majorly, and thus hurt the Jets field position game. All I can say now, on March 22: be brave Brad! Return kicks! I’ll probably be biting my words come football season, whenever that is.

Meanwhile, they also voted today to make every scoring play available to be reviewed by the booth, saving the coaches a challenge. I like this rule change a lot. Just get it right. You have replay there. Use it.

Doug Ferguson of the AP reported today on a potentially fascinating and game changing rule change working its way through the ranks that could completely change how players get to the PGA Tour. Here’s the crux of what would be different:

Under the preliminary plan, the top 125 on the FedEx Cup standings after the Wyndham Championship would advance to the playoffs and compete for $35 million in bonus money, with $10 million for the winner.

Those who don’t make the top 125 would have the option of playing a series of three tournaments along with top Nationwide Tour players. Those tournaments also would have a points structure, and it would determine who gets PGA Tour cards the following season.

Among the numbers being mentioned for the three-tournament series is 75 players from the FedEx Cup standings and the top 50 players from the Nationwide Tour money list, with the top 50 players from that series earning their cards.

Ferguson goes on to say that the plight of the Fall Series events is currently unknown.

My take is this: if the three events they use are Nationwide Tour events, then the PGA Tour needs to make sure the average PGA Tour pro has enough good, solid playing opportunities throughout the year.

However, if they can work that out, it will certainly bring some intrigue to the sometimes boring end of the golf season, after the FedEx Cup playoffs conclude.

A first time winner tops this week’s What It Means:

Gary Woodland Wins the Transitions Championship: He’s been injured more than he’s played in the last couple years. He lost to Johnny Vegas in a playoff at the Bob Hope earlier this year. He was nervous. He had a major adrenaline rush. All that notwithstanding, Gary Woodland stepped up and used a hot putter to get his first PGA Tour win today in Tampa. He made 17 of 17 putts inside of 20 feet today. Yes, every single putt in side of 20 feet. You wanna know how to lower your score? Make more putts from 20 feet and in.
