RYDER CUP: 2010 Preview & TV Times

So here’s my final thoughts on the 2010 Ryder Cup. All through the summer I thought that Europe was by far the more powerful team and would be the favorites by a large margin. And then the Peter Hansons of the world got added to the team. I think that in the end the US team is much, much more well-balanced than Europe is, and will eek out a close victory, with help from some of the US rookies. I think on the contrary some of Europe’s rookies, like Hanson and the Molinari brothers, may struggle.

My prediction: US retains the Cup, 15 1/2 to 12 1/2.

Saturday, NBC, TAPE 8am-6pm ET
Sunday, NBC, LIVE 7am-1pm ET

NEW YORK JETS: Revis Out for Buffalo

Darrelle Revis, the Jets star CB is OUT this week against Buffalo. The hamstring just will not heal fast enough for that to happen.

Calvin Pace may also not play, and Kyle Wilson may be replaced by Drew Coleman in the starting lineup (which would be a good move.)

TIGER WOODS: Lee Westwood Next to Take a Run at #1?

The Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) is very complicated to explain to people, but here’s a synopsis. It’s based over a two year system, and the current year outweighs the previous year. So to give a broad example, if you finished 21st in all your tournaments last year, and 1st in all your tournaments last year, clearly you are going to move up. Obviously if you did the reverse, you will move down.

Golf isn’t that simple, however, and the reason why Tiger Woods has been able to stay at world’s #1 for so long in 2010 is a combination of how good his 2009 was and how poor Phil Mickelson has played since Augusta.

He’s played so bad since Augusta that now Lee Westwood has a chance to overtake both Tiger and Phil and become world #1. It’s complicated, but the full details are in this article, so if you’re interested, take a look.

PGA TOUR: Doug Barron Gets TUE, Can Return to Golf

You may remember the story from earlier this year about Doug Barron, who was the first PGA Tour player to get a year’s suspension for violating the tour’s performance-enhancing drugs policy.

Well he has gotten a TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption), will resume playing this month on mini-tours, and will go to PGA Tour Qualifying School this fall to regain his PGA Tour card.

NEW YORK JETS: Jets Sign Trevor Pryce

While he hasn’t gotten off to a great start this year, the Jets signed free agent DL Trevor Pryce today. He has the potential to be a good pass rusher and will make up for some of the depth issues the Jets have on the defensive line.

RYDER CUP: Friday Morning Four-Ball Matchups

Here are the Friday, four-ball (best ball) matches to open up the Ryder Cup (2:30am ET, Live, ESPN):

Phil Mickelson & Dustin Johnson (USA) vs. Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer (EUR)

Jeremy’s take: We’re gonna get a read on how healthy Lee Westwood (calf) is right off the bat.

Stewart Cink & Matt Kuchar (USA) vs. Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell (EUR)

My take: Pretty even match.

Tiger Woods & Steve Stricker (USA) vs. Ian Poulter & Ross Fisher (EUR)

My take: Has the potential to be a fantastic match but don’t forget about Tiger and Steve going 4-0 last year at the President’s Cup.

Bubba Watson & Jeff Overton (USA) vs. Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington (EUR)

My take: Bubba has been gunning to play so badly he could be wayyyy too pumped up and the advantage clearly goes to Europe here.

TIGER WOODS: Foley: Tiger Will Win 22 or 23 Majors

Sean Foley, Tiger Woods’ new swing coach, has been hired by Golf Digest as a teaching professional on staff. Hmm, I wonder why.

Anyway, at an event to announce this, Foley said that Tiger will return to form and win 22 or 23 majors. Don’t believe me. Read this.

Is he right? Only time will tell.
