Happy New Year’s Eve!

28 years ago tonight, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played one of their most legendary shows, on New Year’s Eve, at the Nassau Coliseum out on Long Island.

The night hit it’s high point when Bruce and the band played “In the Midnight Hour,” then popped the cork on some champagne and threw out some confetti, and then played “Auld Lang Syne.”

Here’s some raw video footage of “Midnight Hour”:

And here’s the audio from “Auld Lang Syne”:

One of the cool things about having a blog is that you can see the web searches that people are entering that eventually land them on your blog.

Someone already today (this blog switches over to the next day at 7pm ET) was landed here under the search “tirico and van pelt springsteen song.” The person is referring to the ESPN Radio show “Tirico and Van Pelt” featuring Mike Tirico and Scott Van Pelt.

Well as someone who listened to them a bunch when they first launched, I can tell you the only 2 Bruce songs I heard were “Radio Nowhere” and “Last to Die,” both off his 2007 album Magic.

Hope that helps if you come searching here again.

Mangini is Mangone

I said on the web show 2 weeks ago that by the time this was all set and done Jets coach Eric Mangini would either be Mangenius again or Mangone. Yesterday’s loss proved it would be the later.

After 3 years, 2 of them winning years, he was fired today by the Jets hierarchy. It was the right move. He lost the team after an 8-3 start to this season. Change was needed.

Some players are dissapointed, and that’s understandable. But, in my opinion, for a team that had such a bright start and then such a dismal end, change is needed.

Who should be the next coach isn’t up to me but I’m glad change is coming.

Jets 2009 Opponents Released

Yeah, with a new QB (maybe), and with a new coach (maybe), so much of looking ahead is just that — looking ahead, but tonight the Jets’ learned who their 2009 opponents will be. From Randy Lange of newyorkjets.com:

HOME

AFC East — Buffalo (7-9), Miami (11-5), New England (11-5)

AFC North — Cincinnati (4-11-1)

AFC South — Tennessee (13-3), Jacksonville (5-11)

NFC South — Atlanta (11-5), Carolina (12-4) Panthers

AWAY

AFC East — Buffalo (7-9), Miami (11-5), New England (11-5)

AFC South — Indianapolis (12-4), Houston (8-8)

AFC West — Oakland (5-11)

NFC South — New Orleans (8-8), Tampa Bay (9-7)”

What’s really wrong to do is to throw out a record with so many unknowns…but heck, I will…9-7.

NFL Wild Card Weekend Set

Well, my Jets didn’t make it, but 8 teams will be competing next weekend on Wild Card Weekend. It’s an awesome weekend of action, and I’ll be giving previews and predictions later on in the week. But here are the matchups:

AFC:
6. Baltimore Ravens (11-5) at 3. Miami Dolphins (11-5) — Sunday, 1 p.m. (CBS)
5. Indianapolis Colts (12-4) at 4. San Diego Chargers (8-8) Saturday, 8 p.m. (NBC)

NFC:
6. Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1) at 3. Minnesota Vikings (10-6) — Sunday, 4:30 p.m. (Fox)
5. Atlanta Falcons (11-5) at 4. Arizona Cardinals (9-7) — Saturday, 4:30 p.m. (NBC)

P.S. Last year I started blogging during divisional weekend…those 4 games + the 2 championship games + the Super Bowl left me 6-1 in my picks. Let’s see how that track record holds up this year.

QU Sports Update

Holiday time means Quinnipiac Sports’ took some time off, so let me update you:

Quinnipiac Men’s Hockey has been off for 24 days, and restarts their season tomorrow at the UCONN Classic versus Merrimack. That game can be heard @ 4 pm ET on http://www.wqun.com.

Men’s Basketball, now 6-4 and 2-0 in the NEC conference, plays at Brown tomorrow at 1pm ET, in a game that can be seen on NESN.

And finally the very strong Women’s Basketball team lost today to Duke, 78-50. However they still are 8-3, probably the best team in the Bank, and hey — if you’re a team that gets to play inside of Cameron Indoor Stadium, you’ve done something very right.

And don’t forget to check out the WQAQ Sports Site for everything QU Sports!

It just wasn’t meant to be. Baltimore won, and the Pats won, so even if we had won 42-0 it wouldn’t have mattered.

My Jets went on to lose, punctuated, poetically I guess, by some Brett Favre’s interceptions. I truly believe that is Brett’s last game as a player.

Eric Mangini’s future is another story. I could see him getting fired, I could see him staying. It’s the staff that has to go. Bob Sutton — goodbye…your run defense faltered late and your pass defense was atrocious.

Brian Schottenheimer was actually OK, I just felt we had a QB not fit for the system.

The personnel they acquired in the off season I like and I think performed well. In the end, however, the QB made too many mistakes and the defense couldn’t stop tight ends and wide receivers.

It’ll be a long, rough off season here for the Jets, but I’ll be here to cover it, every step of the way.

To coincide with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s Super Bowl 43 Halftime performance coming up on February 1, two songs, My Lucky Day (off the forthcoming Working on a Dream album) and Born to Run will be available for free download for Guitar Hero World tour.

The thinking here is simple — people, especially kids, will play these songs and say “wow, I like them,” and want to go buy the new album. That means more sales for Born to Run and Working on a Dream.

We’ll see if it all works, but I can’t wait to play them.

Yes, Golf IS A Sport

Yes, finally someone with some medical credence in the world says so. According to Neil Wolkodoff, director of the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences in Denver’s study on golf and fitness, it is a yes.

Here’s the article.
